Vera Saldivar de Lira is a lens based artist born and raised in Aguascalientes, Mexico, where She completed her undergrad degree in Architecture in 2017. After freelancing in Architecture for a few months, She then enrolled in the One Year Certificate in Creative Practices at the International Center of Photography in New York City, wich she completed in 2018, before enrolling into the ICP- Bard MFA program. Growing up in a conservative and overprotective home, She really never had the freedom to go out to photograph or develop her interest in the arts, as a result of this, She developed a fear for the crowds and open spaces, also known as Agoraphobia, that She later started exploring and challenging through her work.
Influenced by her studies in Architecture, She brought into view her relationship with open spaces and urban environments, particullarly by walking through them. Also influenced by Walter Benjamin’s unfinished book The Arcades Project and Charles Baudelaire’s Flowers of Evil She examines shifting through spaces, Flaneurism, and wandering through cities and landscapes and stranging herself from public spaces.
Her works talk about fragmentation of personality and consciousness by exploring the materiality of photography through chemical processes, in camera performances and printing experiments; recently more focused on the way we record, handle and discard information; what is the role of space and movement and the body when making imprints or documenting actions.
